Puccini Festival 64th Edition, 2018, Torre del Lago

Named after the famous artist Giacomo Puccini, this festival is the most important opera event in Italy. Housed in the Great Open Air Theatre of Massaciuccoli, surrounded by the awe inspiring sunset over the lake, the festival stages the most prominent works of the Maestro, featuring direction, music, ballet and acting by world famous artirsts.

The Operas

La Bohème:

Set in paupers' Paris, this tale sees the poet Rodolfo fall in love for the seamstress Mimi, but they are destined to face separation. As he laments his loss, so his flatmate Marcello laments his past with the beautiful Musetta. Musetta then arrives to announce that Mimi is dying, but when Rodolfo rushes to her, it is already too late.


Turandot:

This is an adaptation of an old Persian Tale. The marvelous, ice-cold Princess Turandot, demands correct answers to three riddles from all her suitors. If the answers are not correct, they are doomed to execution. Then Prince Calaf comes, answering the riddles correctly, and then asks a riddle of his own, offering the Princess a release from marriage if she can discover his name. But she is unwilling to do so: she does know the prince's name, but decides to keep it to herself: she is in love.


Tosca:

When Cavaradossi conceals a fugitive and gets caught, her lover, Floria Tosca, is interrogated by the cruel chief of police, Scarpia. In an effort to save her lover she agrees to give herself to Scarpia, which promises her to stage a fake execution for Caravadossi. She then stabs Scarpia and rushes to Cavaradossi, only to discover the execution is real. Devastated, she commits suicide. 


Il Triticco:

Trittico in italian refers to a work of art divided into three parts. Il tabarro, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi are themed after murder, tragedy and dark comedy. In the first Opera, a husband kills his wife’s lover, revealing the body to her as she returns to him contrite. Suor Angelica tells the story of Sister Angelica, who gives up her illegitimate son, only to discover from that the child she cherished in her heart had died. The comedy Gianni Schicchi sees the peasant and father of Lauretta, pretend to be the dead Donati whose fortune has been left to a monastry. In an agreement with the dead man’s family, he fools the lawyer and changes the will, but much to their horror, changes it in his favour, enabling his daughter to marry Rinuccio, a relative of the deceased’s cousin.
